Frequently asked questions
The most common questions about CV Builder.
Is CV Builder free?
Yes. No sign-up, no paid plan and no watermark on the PDF. The site is supported by ads, which never appear on your resume.
Where is my data kept?
Only in your browser, in your device's local storage. Nothing is sent to a server. If you clear your browser data or use a private window, the resume is gone, which is why there's an "Export backup" button.
How do I download a PDF?
Click "Download" and pick "PDF". The print dialog opens: set the destination to "Save as PDF" and turn off "Headers and footers" so the date and page address don't print. The file comes out in A4.
Can I download it as Word or an image?
Yes, from the "Download" menu. "Word (.docx)" gives you an editable file; the Modern template comes out in one column, without the sidebar. "Image (PNG)" shows up once the resume has a name, contact details and one job or course, and fits on 1 page. Every file is made in your browser.
Do I lose my resume if I close the page?
No. The draft saves itself in your browser as you type. When you come back, the site asks whether to pick up where you left off or start over. Starting over erases the current draft, so export a backup first if you want to keep it.
How do I move my resume to another computer or phone?
Click "Export backup" to download a .json file, then use "Import backup" with that file on the other device.
Which template should I pick?
Classic for large companies that screen with applicant tracking systems (ATS). Modern to highlight contact details and skills in a sidebar. With photo when the job expects a photo. Executive for management roles, with a sober serif look. Color band for a header that stands out. Timeline to show how your career progressed. Compact to fit more content on a single page.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. It's cropped square and resized inside your browser, and stays on your device with the rest of the resume.
Can my resume run longer than one page?
Yes. The preview shows a dashed line where each page starts. Experience entries aren't split across a page break.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. On phones the form comes first with the preview right below. For the PDF, Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone can save as PDF from the print or share menu.
