Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about Compressor.

Is Compressor free?

Yes. No sign-up, no paid plan and no watermark. The site is supported by ads.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Images are opened and compressed by your own browser. Nothing leaves your computer or phone.

Which formats work?

JPG, PNG and WebP in every browser. AVIF, GIF and HEIC work when your browser can open them; the output is always JPG, PNG or WebP.

How many images can I compress at once?

Up to 50 at a time. For more, compress in batches.

Which format should I choose?

WebP for the smallest file, JPG to send to anyone and PNG for logos, icons and screenshots with text. "Keep" leaves each image in its original format.

What quality should I use?

Between 60 and 80 the difference is barely visible. The default, 75, is a good balance. Below 50 smooth areas start to look blotchy.

Why was an image marked "already optimized"?

Because compressing it again would not make the file smaller. In that case Compressor gives you the original, with nothing lost.

Are camera data and location kept?

No. EXIF metadata, including location, is removed from every image. The photo's rotation is applied first, so it won't end up sideways.

Does PNG get smaller?

Sometimes. PNG is lossless, so the savings come from reducing the pixel size or switching to WebP. Screenshots usually get much smaller as WebP.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. On iPhone, HEIC photos are converted to JPG.
