Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about Video Compressor.

Is Video Compressor free?

Yes. No sign-up, no paid plan and no watermark. The site is supported by ads.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is opened and compressed by your own browser. Nothing leaves your computer or phone.

Which formats work?

MP4, MOV and WebM, up to 2 GB. The output is MP4 (H.264 with AAC) when your browser can encode it; otherwise WebM (VP9 or VP8 with Opus).

Why didn't my video get smaller?

Some videos are already well compressed, and compressing them again saves no space. In that case the tool tells you and you can keep the original. Lowering the resolution usually helps.

Is the final size exact?

In Max size mode, the video is tuned to stay within the limit, with a small margin. With the presets, the size shown is an estimate.

Will I lose quality?

Some, always: compression means throwing away detail. With Light or Balanced the difference is usually hard to see on a phone screen. Keep the original.

How long does it take?

It depends on your device and the video. On a recent computer, a 1-minute 1080p video takes from a few seconds to about a minute. Phones take longer.

Which browsers does it work in?

Recent Chrome, Edge, Safari 17 or newer and Firefox 130 or newer. The tool uses WebCodecs, the browser's video feature; if it's missing, the page tells you.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. See the WhatsApp guide.

Are subtitles kept?

No. The tool keeps one video track and one audio track; embedded subtitles and extra audio tracks are left out.
