Frequently asked questions

The most common questions about GifCut.

Is GifCut free?

Yes. No sign-up, no paid plan, no watermark. The site is supported by ads.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The video is opened and the GIF is made by your own browser. Nothing leaves your computer or phone.

Which video formats work?

Whatever your browser can play: MP4 (H.264) and WebM everywhere; MOV and HEVC depend on the browser and system. If a video won't open, convert it to MP4 H.264.

How long can the clip be?

30 seconds per GIF. The source video can be any length; you pick the clip.

Why is my GIF so big?

Size grows with width, height and frame count. Lower the width, lower the FPS or shorten the clip. The estimate shows the effect of each change before you make the GIF.

What's the difference between single and per-frame palette?

A GIF has up to 256 colors per frame. A single palette picks the colors once for the whole GIF and makes smaller files; a per-frame palette looks better when colors change a lot across the clip.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. The GIF format can't store audio.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, in Chrome on Android and Safari on iPhone. See the phone guide.

Can I use the GIF anywhere?

The GIF is yours to the extent the video is yours. Respect the rights of whoever made the original video.
